QUICK START TENNIS EQUIPMENT
FOAM TENNIS BALLS
To start with, there are two types of balls, the felt balls (which are similar in size to regular balls), and foam balls, which are much larger, softer, and easier to hit than the felt balls. Foam balls are designed for juniors as young as two, although many coaches advocate using them for beginning players up to the age of eight. Foam balls are not color coded.
FELT BALLS
An easy way to remember which felt balls are appropriate for what ages is that red felt balls are designed for juniors aged 8 and under (and 36' long tennis courts), orange felt balls are designed for juniors aged 10 and under (and 60' long tennis courts), and green felt balls are designed for 11 and 12 year olds (and 78' feet long regular sized courts).
JUNIOR TENNIS RACQUET SIZES
As for junior tennis racquets, generally speaking, 19" racquets are recommended for 2-4 year olds, 21" racquets for 4-6 year olds, 23" racquets for 6-8 year olds, and 25" racquets for 9-10 year olds.
QUICK START TENNIS COURT SIZES
It's helpful to know that 36' feet tennis courts are recommended for 6-8 year olds, 60' feet tennis courts are recommended for 9-10 year olds, and 78' full length tennis courts are recommended for players aged 11 and older.
